How to Easily Test Your Car's Battery

You can easily test your vehicle's battery by using a voltmeter. If you don't own a voltmeter you can easily acquire one from a neighbor, auto parts supplier, or home improvement store. With the vehicle turned off touch the positive and negative test probes to the positive and negative terminals on the battery. Make sure your voltmeter is set to measure volts. The reading you are looking for is 12.4 volts or higher.

When Do I Need to Replace My Car's Battery?

If your car's battery doesn't hold a charge and you consistently measure a reading of below 12.4 volts on the voltmeter then it's probably time to replace the battery. The age of the battery plays a factor as well; if it is over five years old then it is likely you should replace it.
